Each year, BMD’s performances and education programs introduce more than 12,000 people of all ages to the joy of dance. BMD has collaborated with the best artists from a variety of fields, and has instituted outreach programs that, as evidenced by thoughtful feedback, have touched the lives of thousands.
In 2008, Washingtonian recognized BMD as “one of the area’s best dance troupes” and McCauley as among the “top men and women who have helped transform Washington into one of the nation’s liveliest centers for the performing arts.” The Washington Post called BMD “Metro DC’s premier contemporary dance company.”
PERFORMANCE
1 to 2 hours, appropriate for all ages
BMD’s professional dancers give moving performances that resonate and inspire.
Performances include post-performance discussion with the performers and choreographer.
Full Stage: 8 to 10 dancers, full sets and costumes, live music performances of 1½ hours
Small Stage: 4 to 6 dancers, minimal sets and costumes, performances of 1 hour
Special Audience: programs designed to appeal to the particular audience, whether youth, senior or special needs
Exclusive Performance: Choreography tailored to each venue and cause
WORKSHOP/MASTER CLASS
1 to 3 hours, appropriate for all ages
Lucy and dancers spend 1-3 hours with up to 35 individuals in age-appropriate warm-up exercises and floor-work that includes excerpts from BMD repertoire.
MINI-PERFORMANCE + LECTURE
45 minutes – 1 hour, appropriate for all ages
BMD’s engaging 45-60 minute mini-performance + lectures provide participants additional opportunities to enjoy contemporary dance and discover how choreographers create, how dance is integrated with other art forms, and the importance of dance to human experience. Audience members leave more knowledgeable and excited about dance, with a sense of new possibilities that carry over into academic as well as personal interests.
RESIDENCY
Multi-day, one week or multi-session, appropriate for middle school students and above, also appropriate for dance or theater students
BMD’s customized residencies (3-10 days) feature professional instruction in ballet-based contemporary dance. Culminating performances include student or BMD choreography. Arts-integrated, SOL supported, educational residencies are also available.
