BMD Receives 2013 Dominion ArtStars Award

Virginians for the Arts (VFTA) named Bowen McCauley Dance the 2013 Dominion ArtStars Award recipient.

Through the generosity of Dominion, a longtime supporter of the arts in Virginia, a cash prize of $5,000 will be presented to BMD as the “Shining Star” winner at an upcoming performance by BMD on November 16, 2013 at the CenterStage at Reston Community Center (RCC). BMD will perform in celebration of the 100th Anniversary of The Rite of Spring as part of RCC’s double feature program; they will be followed by The Bohemian Jazz Orchestra. Winners also will be recognized at the January 2014 ArtWorks conference in Richmond.

We are honored to join VFTA in recognizing arts organizations that are among the Commonwealth’s best,” said Hunter Applewhite, president of the Dominion Foundation.  “We value the efforts of each organization because the creative nature of the arts is essential to building vibrant communities and a strong economy.”

VFTA received 78 award nominations this year, which were carefully evaluated over the summer by a panel of judges from around the Commonwealth.  “We are equally pleased with this year’s program,” said Jim Thompson, VFTA board president.  “Once again, the competition was fierce as each organization brings a unique and worthwhile arts program to these communities.  It proved to be another tough challenge for our judges who had to make some very difficult choices at the end of the day.”

The Shining Star Awards are bestowed upon arts organizations that have an extraordinary impact on the community; successfully develop community partnerships, as well as business, legislative, and local community support; contribute to K-12 education; and demonstrate sustained excellence through the years. One Shining Star ($5,000) was awarded on a statewide basis for those organizations with annual budgets of $1 million or more; and One Shining Star ($5,000 each) was awarded in each of the five regions (Central Virginia, Hampton Roads/Eastern Shore, Northern Virginia, Southwest, and Shenandoah Valley/Piedmont) for organizations with annual budgets of less than $1 million.
