In November, BMD embarks on its first tour to China, with stops in Hong Kong and Guangzhou. BMD is honored to be the first American dance company to be invited to the Guangdong International Modern Dance Festival, widely regarded as one of the most important international contemporary dance events in China. The Company will join a host of well-known dance companies from around the world for a week of performances on the beautiful Shamian Island and will perform Fire and Air and Lucy’s Local Playlist on November 10. BMD looks forward to numerous performing, teaching and speaking engagements while abroad and is especially excited to work with the US Consulate to bring Dance for PD classes to Southern Hospital while in Guangzhou.
Not long after BMD returns from Asia, the Company takes to the stage locally for the 100th Anniversary of Rite of Spring performance at Reston CenterStage in Reston, Va. on November 16 at 8:00 p.m. BMD will perform Lucy’s original choreography with four hand piano version of the score performed by The Witkowski Piano Duo. The piece has been considered the staple of modern dance – angular and abstract – with a score full of harmonic dissonance and syncopated rhythms. “I want people to relate to the full emotional range of the work and the unfolding of events in a less obvious way,” says Artistic Director Lucy Bowen McCauley. This production features set and costume design by award-winning designer Tony Cisek and lighting design by Martha Mountain. BMD will be presented the 2013 Dominion ArtStars Shining Star Award at the Concert, statewide recognition for sustained artistic excellence presented by Virginians for the Arts.
The New Year commences on January 4, 2014 at 8:00 p.m. with BMD’s performance as part of the Modern Moves Festival at the Atlas Performing Arts Center in Washington, D.C. Dance Place showcases twelve world-class contemporary dance companies, highlighting the rich field of modern dance in the Greater DC Metropolitan area. BMD will present Fire and Air, a theatrical re-imagining of Shakespeare’s “Antony and Cleopatra,” directed by The Shakespeare Theatre Company’s Associate Director Alan Paul with a rare performance by Lucy Bowen McCauley. This concert was selected by The Washington Post’s Sarah Kaufman as a “not-to-be-missed” program in the Fall Fine Arts Preview.
BMD returns to The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Terrace Theater for An Evening of Dance and Music on February 12 and February 13 at 7:30 p.m. BMD brings together scenic designer Tony Cisek; lighting designer Martha Mountain; guest artists Ilana Goldman and Gabriel Williams ; and a host of accomplished musicians, including country-rock music legends Jason Ringenberg and Warner Hodges of Jason and the Scorchers, for an evening of dance and music. BMD will present four works, including two world premiere pieces: NEW ENSEMBLE WORK and “Far Behind” a heart-wrenching duet that will eventually be a part of the evening long collaboration between BMD and Jason and The Scorchers, titled Victory Road.
