BMD Brings American Dance to China

BMD is honored to be the first American dance company to be invited to the Guangdong Modern Dance Festival, widely regarded as one of the most important international contemporary dance events in China.

Bowen McCauley Dance (BMD) will embark on its first tour to China, with stops in Beijing, Tianjin, Guangzhou, and Hong Kong from November 4 -13, 2013. The Company will join a host of well-known dance companies from around the world for a week of performances on the beautiful Shamian Island at the Guangdong Modern Dance Festival in Guangzhou, China.

We asked the dancers what they enjoy most about touring with BMD. Read what excites them about our China tour.

The Company will perform Fire and Air and Lucy’s Local Playlist on November 10.

Fire and Air, was directed by The Shakespeare Theatre Company’s Associate Director Alan Paul and premiered at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in March of 2013. The work is a dramatic reimagining of Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra and features a rare performance by Lucy Bowen McCauley with an original music score by New York composer Patrick Soluri.

DC Metro Theater Arts described Fire and Air as “filled with passion, sensuality, and sizzling chemistry,” leaving the critic, Joel Markowitz, “breathless as this emotionally moving work came to a stunning end.”

Lucy’s Local Playlist, which premiered at Synetic Theater is a collection of eleven dances inspired by DC’s vibrant music scene with choreography performed to a variety of music genres from the legendary “Godfather of Go-Go” Chuck Brown, to music by up-and-coming rockers Sell Out Youth.

Additionally, BMD is working with the U.S. Consulate in Guangzhou and Ping Pong Productions to offer a variety of performances and master classes to local university students and to the general community. Ping Pong Productions is an American production company in China that initiated the American Cultural Center Tours to bring American performing artists to tour American Cultural Centers based in universities across China. BMD will spend some time in Beijing and Tinjian at the beginning of the trip, where the Company will perform and offer a master class at the Tinjian University of Sport.

BMD looks forward to numerous performing, teaching and speaking engagements while abroad and is especially excited to bring Dance for PD (Parkinson Disease) classes to Southern Hospital in Guangzhou in partnership with the U.S. Consulate.
