Lucy and the Company returned from China after 9 days of performances and outreach activities. Read about BMD’s tour and adventures through China!
Days 1 – 2 Beijing
First stop…Beijing! Lucy and the China Cohort enjoyed a nice flight to Beijing. The first night, the Company had a relaxing dinner at a local restaurant. The next day included a full day of sightseeing, including Tiananmen Square and the famous Forbidden City. Tonight, the dancers are resting up for their first full day of performances and master classes tomorrow at the Tianjin University of Sport.
Days 3 – 4 Tianjin
The Company had their first performance in China. Invited by Ping Pong Productions as part of their American Cultural Center Tours Programs, BMD had a full day of workshops and performances at Tianjin University of Sport. BMD dancers Alicia Curtis and Dustin Kimball led university dance students through excerpts from Lucy’s Local Playlist. Lucy meet with university faculty, led a Q&A session with students, and discussed her choreographic and artistic process. The day concluded with an evening performance shared with university dance students. BMD took to the stage for performances of Lucy’s Local Playlist and Fire and Air, the first of many during this tour. The Company is excited to bring American dance and music to a foreign audience! Stay tuned for more as the company heads to Guangzhou on Friday.
Days 5 – 6 Guangzhou
BMD traveled from Tianjin to Guangzhou on Friday and spent the evening relaxing at the Garden Hotel. Saturday was a full day of classes and rehearsals on Shaimian Island. As the first American dance company invited to perform at the 10th Guangdong Dance Festival, Lucy and the dancers are looking forward to the first day of festival performances tomorrow. Tonight, the festival will kick off with a cast party and a performance by local artists.
Day 7 – Guangdong Dance Festival
Sunday’s performances were a big success! The festival brough in a large crowd from the local community in Guangzhou and Shamian Island. We could not have asked for better weather for a day of outdoor performances! BMD performed throughout the day on Sunday with multiple performances of Lucy’s Local Playlist, a showcase of truly American style of music by local DC artists, and Fire and Air, a collaboration between Lucy Bowen McCauley and The Shakespeare Theatre’s Associate Director Alan Paul. What a thrill to perform for new audiences in such a beautiful setting!
Day 8 – Guangzhou and Foshan
The festival performance were a huge hit with the local Guangzhou community! Not only was BMD’s outdoor performance the first in the festival’s history, but also it was the city’s first outdoor public gathering in general. Having been informed by the US Consulate in Guangzhou that BMD made local history, we are proud to have been part of the first outdoor public gathering allowed by the local government.
The excitement continued on Monday as Lucy taught a Dance for PD class for people with Parkinson Disease at Southern Hospital in Guangzhou and the Company traveled to Foshan that afternoon. Many thanks to the US Consulate in Guangzhou and the Guangdong Dance Festival for helping BMD coordinate a Dance for PD class at Southern Hospital. Lucy was happy to share her love of the Dance for PD program with the patients and hospital staff.
Additionally, Lucy and the Company performed at a school in Foshan to an audience of over 1,000 students. BMD was proud to be a part of US-China relations and honored by the school’s very warm welcome. Thank you to Ping Pong Productions who helped make this performance in Foshan possible! The Company will spend the remainder of the trip in Hong Kong and will fly back to the States on Wednesday. Stay tuned for final updates!
