Lucy Bowen McCauley (Artistic Director & Choreographer) was raised in Indianapolis, and has been dancing since childhood. Her early training at the Jordan School of Music and Dance and at Interlochen Academy gave her the solid understanding of music and its interaction with dance that has become the hallmark of her choreography.
In New York City, she studied at the Joffrey Ballet School and with Finis Jhung, Igal Perry, Jean-Paul Mustone, Doug Varone and Nina Wiener.
McCauley has performed with the Joffrey Concert Group and several New York modern companies, the Maryland Ballet, the Virginia State Ballet, DC Contemporary Dance Theater, Daniel West Dancers, and Eric Hampton Dance (where she was a founding member).
Since she founded Bowen McCauley Dance in 1996, McCauley has created over 40 works. Her choreography ranges from lyrical to pointe-work to highly-physical dances set to aggressive rock music thus offering an unconventional array of musical choices exploring the relationship between music and dance. Other companies that have performed her work include The Maryland Youth Ballet, DC Dance Theater, Manassas Dance Company, and the acclaimed Mexican contemporary dance company, Cuerpo Etéro.
McCauley has been on the faculty of the Maryland Youth Ballet since 1990. She has also been a guest teacher at ABT, the Orlando Ballet, the Kennedy Center, and the Escuela Superior de Música y Danza, Monterrey, Mexico.
In addition to her achievements as a dancer and choreographer, McCauley has pioneered a unique stretch technique, Bowen McCauley Stretch, which has been featured in Sports Illustrated, USA Today, Dance Teacher, and The Washington Post. While McCauley has trained Olympic athletes such as medalists Dominique Dawes and Courtney Kupets, her classes appeal to dancers, weekend-athletes and anyone interested in keeping fit.
In 2003, Lucy was awarded Alumni Path of Inspiration Award from the Interlochen Arts Academy and The Arlington Commission for the Arts STAR Award for Artistic Excellence.
