BOWEN McCAULEY DANCE
E-News - Fall 2003

Greetings! Welcome to the first Bowen McCauley Dance e-newsletter. As we test-drive this new version of newsletters, you will still receive a printed newsletter later in the season. In this issue, we talk about lots of exciting events, and we don’t want you to miss a beat. We look forward to seeing you at the upcoming Kennedy Center performance and throughout the season.

BOWEN MCCAULEY DANCE OPENS SEASON ON THE RIGHT FOOT
Bowen McCauley Dance opens its eighth season at the Kennedy Center Terrace Theatre on October 15th at 7:30 p.m., with an eclectic program featuring two world premieres. One is a sumptuously dramatic work to composer Astor Piazzolla, and the other a solo for Ian Lindeman, Bronze Medal winner at the National Youth Grand Prix, to Brahms’ Neue Liebeslieder-Walzer.

Joining the Company in this performance are young dancers from The Maryland Youth Ballet and Ian Lindeman from the Universal Ballet Academy.

See you there!

Viva el Mexico: The Company’s International Premiere!
On the heels of the season’s opening performance at the Kennedy Center, Bowen McCauley Dance makes its international premiere in November. Artistic Director Lucy Bowen McCauley and six members of the Company will travel to Monterrey, Mexico, as part of the Festival Nacional Extremadura Danza Contemporea. They will perform works from the Company repertoire, including the new Piazzolla work, and McCauley will teach master classes and choreography.

This project is sponsored by The Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation in cooperation with a consortium of DC metro arts agencies that includes the Cultural Affairs Division of Arlington. The trip is part of a bi-national cultural exchange initiative funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts. McCauley Dance is proud to be the only dance company chosen to represent the metropolitan DC area in the pilot year of this cultural exchange.

Look for more news of Mexico in the spring of 2004, when McCauley will travel to Tijuana and Mexicali for another residency under the same project.

On the Road Again…
Lucy has been chosen for the Old Dominion Choreographers Showcase. In between the Kennedy Center concert and the Mexico departure, the Company will perform ah, love at University Theater at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va., on Saturday, November 1, and Sunday, November 2. Pass on the information on to friends or family who live in the Norfolk area!

BMD Does Broadway
This summer, BMD was chosen to open the 2nd New York International Dance Festival at the Duke Theater on 42nd Street at Broadway. An enthusiastic audience saw an exciting mixed bill with the perennial audience favorite What’ll Ya ‘Ave, Luv, Lucy’s sad and languid solo Angel Eyes; an energetic Terpsichoros (to the lively accompaniment of Hesperus); an evocative ode to love in ah, love; and the explosive serial canon Musica Ricercata with piano accompaniment by Musical Director Laurie Bunn. A triumph for everyone – especially Lucy, the dancers and musicians!

SUMMER OUTREACH ACTIVITIES DELIGHT FAMILIES AND CHILDREN!
Many area families celebrated June 15, Fathers’ Day, with BMD at the annual free performance at Lubber Run Amphitheater in Arlington. One concert highlight was Jazz Pizzicato (2003) for Ross Gudis and Michael Parsons, two talented young dancers from the Maryland Youth Ballet. Following their spirited performance, young audience members were invited on stage to join with them in some dance moves!
On August 1, Lucy Bowen McCauley and Company member Robert Sidney participated for the second year in Project Children, which brings a group of children from war-torn Ireland to Washington to stay with families for the summer. Under the generous sponsorship of the Wheeler Foundation, McCauley helped coordinate a full Arts Day, involving over 50 children, which culminated in an informal performance. Lucy reflected that “working with these special children is not only demanding but also very stimulating and rewarding.”

New Positions, New Faces
BMD is pleased to announce the appointment of Board member Ted Guthrie as the new Executive Director, who, for the present, graciously assumes this position in a volunteer capacity. Ted has danced professionally, and advised and assisted a number of artists and arts organizations for 20 years in Portland, Oregon, where he was a practicing lawyer. Recently retired and relocated to the Washington area, Ted has watched BMD “develop over the last five years…..BMD is a cultural treasure that deserves a wider access and better funding.”

Welcome to Mauria Peckham, the newest face on the Board of Directors. As Director of Dance at The Holton-Arms School, Mauria brings a strong passion for and a wealth of dance knowledge that is sure to inspire us all.

Another new face, Brianne Barrow, joins the BMD administrative team as Director of Institutional Communications. In this position, she will be working in both marketing/pr and development. Previously full time with The Washington Ballet as Public Relations and Group Sales Coordinator, Brianne began work toward a Master’s in Dance and Graduate Certificate in Arts Management at AU this fall. BMD is very fortunate to have such a capable and dedicated part-time employee. Brianne, welcome to BMD and best of luck in your studies!

BOWEN McCAULEY DANCE has earned a reputation for presenting some of the most refined and musical dance performances to be seen in the Washington area featuring some of the best professional dancers the region has to offer.
