BMD brings together nearly a dozen partners to offer activities and performances that are fun for the entire family. The afternoon culminates with a special performance by the BMD professional dancers and the Kenmore Junior Company.

Volunteer Opportunities:
BMD is in need of volunteers to help with various tasks such as set-up, greeting attendees at check-in, serving as festival guides, ushering during the performance, and more. If you would like to volunteer, please email dance@bmdc.org.

Lucy Receives Pola Nirenska Award for Achievement in Dance

“The flame of her dancing was a light for Washington’s fine young choreographers. She was their muse. She has since scaled hurdles to make her own dances and direct a company that challenges audiences while serving as a showcase for talent.”

Lucy Bowen McCauley is the recipient of the 2012 Pola Nirenska Award for Achievement in Dance, sponsored by Washington Performing Arts Society in conjunction with an annual awards committee jury, funded by donations from the late Dr. Jan Karski, Ms. Nirenska’s husband.

This award provides a monetary contribution of $5,000 which enables Lucy to follow her passion and share it with others. Past recipients of the award include MacArthur Fellowship awardee Liz Lerman, Carla Perlo of Dance Place, and choreographers Eric Hampton, Jacek Luminski, and Sharon Wyrrick.

Pola Nirenska (1910-1992) survives through her work and through the gift of an annual award to honor those who have made outstanding contributions to dance, particularly dance in the Washington area. The award was presented on March 2 on the stage of The Kennedy Center, where Bowen McCauley Dance presented the world premiere performance of Le Sacre du Printemps, choreographed by Lucy Bowen McCauley.
