Interview with Lucy Bowen McCauley – Why Move Me Matters

Mini Performance

Tell us a bit about the history of the Move Me Festival.

Four years ago, we launched this free family- friendly afternoon festival at Kenmore Middle School. Each year, the festival has grown in size and scope with the focus set on all the arts, especially dance. Kenmore is an obviously choice for us because we have been in residence with the school for six years. We view the Festival as a way to engage our community in The Arts through interactive activities and energizing performances.

What is the significance of the festival to BMD’s role as a leader in the community?

We are committed to serving the region by offering a variety of programming throughout the year, particularly in public and private schools. Move Me is our opportunity to throw open the doors to introduce the community to a variety of art forms on a Saturday afternoon. Bowen McCauley Dance is known for its collaborative spirit and inclusiveness and the Move Me Festival is a great example of these qualities!

What do you feel is the most important aspect of the festival and why does it matter to you?

It is a pleasure to present our Arts Partners from Arlington and the greater DC area in the hallways of Kenmore and on the stage and to introduce the community to a huge variety of arts programs. Hopefully we are educating families about The Arts and building audience for all of the groups involved. We are honored to have this leadership role in Arlington.

Arts Partner Testimonial:

“BMD’s commitment to sharing arts with everyone in our community is inspiring and Encore Stage & Studio is so proud to be a part of this outstanding event.  We look forward to the opportunity to collaborate each year at the Move Me Festival. Our students enjoy presenting their own work, but, more importantly, look forward to seeing their peers perform in a variety of disciplines. Thank you to BMD for creating such a wonderful festival for Arlington!”  – Sara Duke, Executive Director, Encore Stage & Studio
